Signs of Diabetes
There are a few different types of diabetes.
Diabetes type one and type two have very similar symptoms. Although there are differences between the two, both are generally diagnosed with a simple glucose test. A glucose test measures the amount of sugar either in your urine or your blood.
One sign of diabetes is frequent urination. Although frequent urination can be the sign of another medical problem, it is cause by high glucose levels that have not been absorbed into your cells. This happens when insulin is either ineffective or does not exist. It will cause your kidneys to take over and attempt to get rid of the excess glucose. To do this, your kidneys will draw water from your body in an attempt to dilute and then expel the glucose.
If your kidneys are absorbing water to get rid of the extra glucose, it may cause you to become dehydrated and as a result to drink more fluid. Excess thirst is another sign of diabetes. Because you are losing water through frequent urination, a seemingly unquenchable thirst is your body’s way of trying to replenish the supply.
Weight loss is another sign of the possible onset of diabetes. This is usually more noticeable in type one. Type one diabetes will cause your body will quickly break down fat and muscle in an attempt to replace the missing glucose. This will generally result in rapid weight loss. It is less noticeable if you have type two diabetes as the body reacts a bit differently and the weight loss is slower.
You may also notice a tingling sensation. This may happen because consistently high levels of glucose can cause nerve damage. The tingling will generally be noticeable in your hands and feet first. This may be a gradual onset with type two diabetes. Your glucose levels may be high for a few years before the tingling sensation becomes noticeable.
It is also possible to feel tired or weak if you have diabetes. Diabetes is caused when the cells in your body cannot absorb glucose. Glucose provides your cells with the energy they need to remain active. If your cells not provided sufficient energy, it may cause you to feel tired.
Diabetes can also affect your eyesight. You may experience blurred vision at times. This is again the result of high glucose levels in your blood. If you have a cut that will not or takes longer than normal to heal, this may be another sign there is something wrong. If the cells in your body are unable to properly function, they will not be able to properly heal themselves either.
These are a few of the signs that diabetes may present. If you show one or more of these signs, do not wait for others to appear. Go to your doctor and get tested. Diabetes may have negative lasting effects on your body if not properly monitored.
